My family and I moved to Howard County in 2000. My son graduated from River Hill High School, attended HCC, and graduated from the Berklee College of Music. My daughter attended HCPSS grades 5-8, graduated from Glenelg Country School, Denison University, and The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner. I graduated from Denison University with BAs in English and History. We have a 2 year old grandson, Henry, who will be attending HCPSS. In my previous professional life I was a project manager for a real estate development and construction company in Massachusetts.

What are the top three issues that you will solve as a Board of Education member?

We must get students safely back into school, develop Budgets under extraordinary fiscal uncertainty, conduct a redistricting process to open HS13, and the HaHS & TSES Additions, as well as determine whether to renew or replace the current Supt. I aim to build on lessons learned from the covid crisis to provide more online learning opportunities going forward; advocate for more programmatic and calendar options such as an IB or Performing Arts High School, OPTIONAL calendars to accommodate working families and maximize capacity utilization, and return the community voice to HCPSS in a meaningful way.

What unique skills & experience do you bring to the Board of Education?

As an education advocate for 20 years in HoCo, and a member of the BOE from 2010-2018, I have a deep knowledge base and experience with Special Education; Local, State and Federal Education Laws and Regulations; the HCPSS Budget, and a demonstrated track record of successfully overcoming obstacles to give the Students, Parents, Staff and Community a true voice in the direction and operations of the HCPSS. I brought together a coalition that successfully removed unresponsive BOE members and Administration, and changed the Law to allow the BOE to fire its own Supt – much at great personal expense.

Why do you want to serve on the Howard County Board of Education?

After all this community went through to remove an unresponsive Board and Administration, I thought we were on a good path forward when I chose not to run for reelection in 2018. In the past year or so I have watched as the BOE/HCPSS quickly returned to old bad habits, including the divisive and ultimately ineffective 2019 redistricting, and clear evidence of BOE dysfunction with some members being excluded and information not being equally shared. There are significant challenges facing HCPSS and our community that I believe I am uniquely qualified to meet immediately at a time where there is no time to waste.
